Monday Morning Birdwalk

(continued from page one)

The giant storm of January 22/23 forced us to cancel the Monday Morning walk because of icy trail conditions and a closed parking lot. Then again on February 15 we were forced to cancel because of weather. But, as I write this in late February, there is the annual hope of spring. Early spring flowers such as (Galanthus nivalis), are blooming as well as Winter Aconite (genus Eranthum). Neither of these is native to our area, but they offer a cheery presence to what otherwise is often a dreary background. Bird behavior shows signs of spring as well. We noticed Brown Creepers recently gathering in small groups as they prepare for the jour-ney to northern nesting grounds. Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers have been pairing up and searching for nest sites. Our growing population of Red-headed Woodpeckers are exploring nesting holes as well. So, take a walk at Huntley and observe. Watch for these little signs in your wanderings at the Park. Again from a Thoreau Journal entry, "The question is not what you look at but how you look and whether you see."

The Monday Morning Bird Walk has been a weekly event at Huntley Meadows Park since 1985. It takes place every week, rain or shine (except during elec- trical storms, strong winds, or icy trails), at 7AM (8AM from November through March), is free of charge, requires no reservation, and is open to all. Birders meet in the parking lot at the Park's en- trance at 3701 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria, VA. Questions should be directed to Park staff during normal business hours at (703)768 - 2525.
